TACHELES – BERLIN

Art houses (Kunsthaus) are collectives of communal living and artists’ studios. The infamous Tacheles was rumoured to be last real home of bohemia and post-80s excess in Berlin.  A fortunate chance meeting with musician, artist and former resident ‘V’ introduced me to the near derelict building heavily laden in tags and graffiti. Tacheles was a beautiful combination of art deco architecture including gilt wrought iron detailing on stairwells perfectly contrasting with the engulfing tags and squat remains.  This interview was done in the last weeks before Tacheles closed forever in 2012. The water and electricity had been turned off on this three storey building for the previous two months. It wasn’t just the graffiti that was overwhelming.
